Either have just upstands or tile to the worktop good luck. Whatever method you choose your kitchens walls will get the protection that they need.
If you get a tile in a contrasting colour you could get quite a nice effect.
Can you tile above upstands. Yes you can put the splashback straight on the tiles but seal the top with silicone sealant to stop any water getting down behind it. I d say you could have both if you wished. Laminate worktop upstands can be cut down easily and re finished with laminate worktop edging strip if needed.
Alternativly a mirrored splashback could work in the space you have. Other people like to mix and match tiles with upstands to get a completely unique look. Presumably extra corners will ruin the look of them.

I like the tiles but if they re a pain to fit then if just go for up stands. I d actually recommend getting an upstand for now until you find the desired tile. Tile on tile or as i say it.

Some people tend to tile the splashback areas of their kitchen which is perfectly fine and can look just as good. I d get a splash back behind the hob that complements the up stands.
Of course you can still use tiles above the upstand if you wish. Unlike tiles our worktop upstands are particularly easy to cut to size and fit in any kitchen. Worktops and upstands in solid beech tiled splashback but whatever you choose it s worth bearing in mind that tiles could be more difficult to keep clean so pick the colour of the tiles and grout carefully.
Upstands are easy to fit. Too large and they will diminish your upstand and too small they might fight with it for prominence. You can t have a statement panel of tiles.
And it lasts for 20 years. Or you may just want to tile the area behind your hob and sink area rather than the whole space. I think if the tiles reflect the height of the upstand you would get away with it.
